POST-OPERATIVE AND AFTER CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Post-Op or After Care Instruction For Space Maintainers

  • Avoid drinking water or eating for 30-60 minutes, to promote the complete setting of cement placed over the tooth
  • Child should preferably have only soft diet like rice, khichdi, upma, idli, curd rice, soft roti/phulka, or mashed vegetables for the first 24-48 hours after the procedure. Avoid hard food for 2-3 days
  • Avoid sticky food to prevent dislodgement of the space maintainer. Although it is cemented onto the tooth structure, these sticky foods can cause the spacer to become loose
  • Space maintainers are extended slightly below the gumline, therefore, expect your child’s gums to be sore for 2-3 days. Your child’s gum may result in bleeding while brushing the teeth for the next few days. To help with healing, maintain oral hygiene by using a soft toothbrush to brush two to three times a day and flossing
  • It may take a few days for your child to adjust to the spacer. Do not let your child pick or pull at the space maintainer as continuous force and pressure can pull it off
  • Child may experience the sensation of extra saliva in the mouth. As a result of the presence of food in the mouth, Given time the mouth realizes that the space maintainer is not food and the increased salivary flow will abate
  • Avoid brushing on that area for that night post-treatment. Continue brushing and flossing as normal from the next day. Focus brushing more in the area of space maintainer to avoid food lodgement
  • Compulsory follow-up every 3-6 months until the adult tooth erupts

Report back if the child has any of these symptoms:

  • If the underlying permanent tooth erupts
  • Dislodgement or breakage of space maintainer
  • New inflammation or signs of infection around the tooth
  • Allergic reaction to medication
